Building a weekender / Overlander

Recommended Posts

As of late I have been toying with the idea of selling my two door JK and get a 4 door so I can build it for weekends, like a descent sleep option, on up one in the bad and a small kitchen for breakfast and coffee.

I am clueless on where to start, so any help or advise appreciated!

I'll start with something simple, deep sleep for jeep makes great air mattresses. Ours has held up without issue for 4+ years, 2 people 2 dogs. Now complicated...if you have an inverter a electric blanket on top of the mattress will keep you toasty on cold nights. See how it snowballs? If I do this I can do that...wait what about doing...also, hmm, maybe...crap, I'm broke thanks Jeep!

great advice - don't over-plan/buy to start with, wait till you see a need.

a 4 door is pretty much required if you want to sleep in it, or do longer trips. get the new rig first, and basic camping supplies if you don't have them already (a small stove, other kitchen supplies, sleep stuff, good folding chair, small headlamp, shovel, water container, ice chest, etc.).

then, besides whatever lift & tires you think you need for the type of trails you want to do, a tailgate table would be my first mod. the Trailgater has been the gold standard, but Frontrunner also makes a similar one for a fair bit cheaper (last time i looked anyway).

just keep posting up as you have more questions!

Not a Jeep guy so YMMV, but I prefer to keep all of my camping stuff in a pelican case.  It's modularized so I can grab the base camp pelican (tent, air mattress, cooking gear) and then accessorize as needed with other pelicans: winter gear pelican (sleeping bag, hand warmers, blankets, tarps), gold panning pelican, ham radio pelican, etc.  I don't know why but I don't like sleeping in or on my vehicle.  I know a lot of folks here do and that's a fine way to go too.

I just find it easier to keep the vehicle light without being burdened by gear until that gear is needed.  I also have the luxury of an RV gate that I normally park behind and a shed with all of this gear in it right next to the truck.  So I can walk outside and throw two or three pelicans in the bed and a sleeping bag. and be off in less time than I'm going to spend at the grocery store filling the cooler.

I am considering upgrading to a tear drop / square drop and some connectivity with it so I can work remote from the National Forest.  Would be nice to drive out somewhere far off, toss out the Sky-Link, and then spend a half day working / every other day working, something like that.

How dare you :-).

In a more serious note, thank you as your comment is super useful and is being added to my list of "what and how to do it". We do own a class C which is quite heavily used for long trips, our goal is to have something in the driveway we can hop on Friday afternoon and do short weekends, primarily in the summer. As for where to sleep. you make a great point but sometimes sleeping in the field is more satisfying for us as it is open air with a view and skies you cannot otherwise appreciate.
