Amazon magnetic mount rock lights

My first cheap DIY rock lights were added in 2017 and have actually worked quite well all these years! i've only had to replace 3 or 4 of them which is pretty good IMO considering they were around $5 a piece. unfortunately i couldn't find the exact ones that i bought originally and the newer ones are a slightly different color temperature which has been killing my OCD!

 

i  also had to re-arrange the mounting a few times as i changed fender flares, rock rails, and bumpers over the years. all-in-all i thought it was time for a refresh.

for the new project, i bought a set of 12 "R4 White Rock Lights" from Amazon for under $80. There are multiple brands which seem to be the exact same thing including LEDMIRCY and LEDKITO. 

 

 

i decided to mount them using magnets, so i grabbed a some #6 screws, matching nylock nuts, and a set of 40lb 3/4" magnets. i also needed a second set of larger nuts to act as spacers on the back side to provide room for the wire to exit.

 

 

here's how i configured each light with that hardware:

 

 

 

for a couple spots i wanted to mount to the inside of the frame rails where the lights would be more protected, so for those i added small angle brackets along with some shorter #6 screws:

the magnets are plenty strong, i'm not even slightly worried about any of the lights falling off.

 

each light is fully potted, so they seem sufficiently waterproof. time will tell how long they last. i ordered 6 extra along with the main kit. each light has a short pigtail with a small waterproof connector, so replacing any that fail should be quick an easy.

 

 

sheathed 18/2 cable from Monoprice was used to wire these up. i ran a long "loop" of cable along the frame rails - starting at the engine bay, down the driver side, then back up the passenger side, splicing in a couple of the little connectors from the kit every so often.

 

i also zip-tied a couple extra loops of wire at every connector so that i can slightly re-locate any lights if i ever need to.

 

all 12 lights from the main kit got used. they are spaced out evenly along each side of the Jeep and that came out plenty bright and with a fairly even glow.
