Chris as I mention in PM I destroyed my factory rocker guards so yes investing in a good set

of rocker guards probably a good idea. I've seen name brand used rockers on Facebook Market Place.

Would just make sure all hardware comes with them if you find a set!

also tagging @Nillabean1999, @Dan.K with 4runners, and @Lichen who has a FJ Cruiser, and @Bradywgn71 & @Mick Bowers with their Lexus - any words of wisdom about essential upgrades for a 4Runner or experiences with particular yota/lexus specific aftermarket vendors? other good forums for yota tech questions besides IH8Mud?

We haven't done much for upgrades with the Lexus as she is the daily.  Redeemed Off-road in N. Phoenix is an amazing guy with tons of Toyota and Lexus knowledge.  I'd trust him for build recommendations.  ASFIR was the brand of skid plates he recommended.  On our list for the future.  Check out the GXOR Arizona or other GXOR groups for excellent builds and help.  Happy wheeling!

While I do technically have a 4runner, it is a few generations older than yours so I'm not sure how much would be applicable to you haha. Mine is a manual 3rd gen. I have a 2 inch suspension lift and a one inch body lift so that I can clear my 35 inch tires.

One of the most common challenges I've had is tearing my cv boots! If that happens to you, and you'd like to fix it yourself, I'd recommend a cv boot stretcher so you don't have to disassemble the entire cv axle. It's very messy!

Decent skid plates are especially important if your not as high of the ground. Sliders would be worth your time as well if you wheel in some high clearance places. RCI and SRQ are pretty good places to start your search.

If you want some good resources, the Facebook forums are excellent. Join us on the AZ 4Runner Outsiders Facebook page as well, tons of owners of all generations on there and we're all friendly!

I’ve modified my current Land Cruiser 200, and a 2014  FJ from stock to specifically wheel in AZ.
The first thing we need is clearance . If you’re not ready to put a basic suspension lift on consider a spacer type lift kit. Pretty inexpensive and you’ll get some clearance .Next,  if you don’t have much clearance a basic set of decent rock sliders are important because you’re gonna have to put a wheel up on high spots. Running boards will only be damaged and cost you more money.
I’m speaking from experience.🥴

Third, with the exception of a bash plate in the front I would put steel shock guards in front of the rear shocks at the low point they’re not too expensive and you can do it yourself.  Check out your T case protection too.

In regard to  tires, when you’re ready for tires  I’d recommend a (hybrid AT/MT) like Niito Ridge grapplers or Yokohama XAT’s.  If you’re going to take it Off Road very much I would buy the certificates for road hazard replacement. They run $50 or $60 each, but they are definitely worth it if you’re gonna run over a lot of rocks.
You can contact me directly via the website or call me on 623-432-2895.
Good luck

Mick
