One other side benefit of this SPOT -> APRS thing was that the guy the owns and runs aprs.fi, no affiliation to us has a far more open approach to position reporting and as such has produced embeddable maps from APRS data.   3. Guys 'n' Gals... Got reading this thread again and it occured to me that we did a trip last year that shows why we built the whole SPOT -> APRS thing. Here's the APRS feed for the date of the 22nd September last year: http://aprs.fi/?call=VK2us-13&dt=1316649600&mt=roadmap&z=11&timerange=3600&_s=sd Now in this area there is no APRS on VHF and as we had a rental 4x4 for the trip we had no HF. Yet we still had APRS coverage using the SPOT. There was another ham along on this trip VK2YX-9 who came up from Alice Springs and was also using tthe SPOT for the APRS component. If you make it to Australia, sorry when you make it to Australia, I'd recomend you spend some time in the Kimberly region.   4. Mike... Well the advantage is that the position report is not just on APRS.FI but the APRS network. In fact aprs.fi is just a way to display whats on the APRS network. Disclaimer number 1 we are not associated with aprs.fi it's just a neat way to display APRS traffic. Well you ask me at present, and I'll ask for you're call sign and the link to your shared page, but we are working on a user interface that allows self provisioning and management. Myself and 3 other amateurs here in Sydney. No. You still need to pay your SPOT subscription but thats between you and them. Disclaimer 2 we're not associated with the guys at SPOT or their holding companies. Nor do we have any commercial ties to them. We're just a bunch of amateurs that thought this was a good idea. No Problem.
  5. G'Day Mike.... A SPOT sends position reports and you get to look at them on the "shared page" APRS sends a position and you see it on APRS.FI or Find-U as well as the RF parts of the APRS network. These are very similar things are they not? So if we take a position report from a SPOT and match the sending unit to an amateur call sign we could send it out on APRS. The upshot of this is that if you are outside of VHF APRS coverage your D700 will still send the report but it will not be heard outside of the radios range and those wanting to follow your progress using APRS would not see these reports. In this situation however your SPOT is still sending a position report every 10 minutes. We take these reports and add your callsign to them and send them into the APRS network. As a result you're still appearing on APRS.FI, FIND-U and the APRS RF networks. Have a look at the 2 APRS calls VK2US-9 which is the TM-D710 in the car and VK2US-13 which is the reports from the SPOT carried on longer trips. Hope this helps clear it up.
  6. Guys... On the subject of SPOTs and APRS we have a system running here which will take a SPOT report and pass it into the APRS network. From an amateur's perspective here are a couple of reasons why we did this: 1.While most of the reports from mobiles are done on VHF it has the least amount of coverage of all of the possible options especially in a place like Australia with vast tracks of un inhabited land. A spot will provide almost global coverage. 2. APRS messages can be submitted via HF however the radio you are using for this becomes dedicated to the task if you are looking to run the tracking full time. A spot frees up this radio to transmit the APRS data meaning you can operate HF mobile while still letting people know where you are. Operation is fairly straight forward and occurs in 2 steps: First we collect the data from the SPOT servers. Then we submit it to the APRS network under the user's callsign. To get a feel for how it's working have a look at these two calls currently using the application VK2JMA-13 and VK2JAP-13. We are now looking to develop the user interface for this which will enable self registration and configuration and are currently wrestling with issues of licence validation but I'm sure this won't be to difficult. This system is still in the development stage however is showing a lot of promise and has been operating non-stop since February this year.
