Apache Maid Area Exploration- Camping At Buckhorn Cabin Saturday June 3rd & Sunday June 4th Primitive Tent Camping | No Facilities Join me for 2 days of easy low mileage exploration on this overland style run. I expect this to be a low key, low effort run before the weather gets too warm. (Trails are colored Teal below) Saturday we will start on Stoneman Lake Road which is approximately 6 miles east of I-17. We will make stops and check out anything interesting along the way this day. We will take Stoneman Lake Road east to Rocky Gulch Ridge then south to a small piece of Apache Maid Trail. We will pick up Cedar Flat Road and turn south until we find 00081A. From there we will snake our way down about 4 miles to the Buckhorn Ranch and cabin where we will camp and check out that area. Sunday morning we will work our way back to Cedar Flat Road then over to the Beaver Creek trail and then southward towards Camp Verde. Meetup,Air-Down and Departure When: June 3rd @ 9:30 A.M, departing no later than 10:00 A.M.. We are only covering about 35-40 miles Saturday so we should make the cabin mid afternoon. Subject to change. Where: Stoneman Lake Road Trailhead. (Where the paved section of Stoneman Lake Road from I-17 ends) Fuel up in Camp Verde if coming from the valley. Please arrived fueled up. Requirements A high clearance 4x4 truck or SUV with a low range transfer case option, suitable front & rear recovery point, aggressive A/T or M/T tires While not required, aftermarket skid plates, rock rails, and sway-bar disconnects are suggested. Rigs & drivers must meet all the typical state/federal legal requirements for on-highway vehicles (license, insurance, registration, seat belts, lights, etc.) Vehicle should be mechanically sound and safe to drive Drivers of varying experience should be fine on this trip PRIMITIVE CAMPING Camping stuff (tent, sleeping bag, chair, stove, etc.) Other Important Details Bring 2 lunches, 1 dinner, 1 breakfast, snacks MORE water than you need Camping (PRIMITIVE) Please bring appropriate clothing and bedding. The gang and I completed our KOFA Run this morning. It was good to see some familiar faces, even Louie the dog was along for the ride. Over the three days we were there we only saw 3 other people, we essentially had the place to ourselves. The weather was perfect, nights were a little colder than I expected but not a big deal. This was my first trip using a tent so I may have felt the cold a little more. Still awesome weather everyday. We ran the trails noted in the original post and added a part of the Hodoo Trail down to the cabin. Those in attendance were: @gearhead (Co-Lead and Tailgunner) @Ken Ford @Mick Bowers @Rawhyd Day 1- We covered approximately 25 miles to camp in the shadow of Polaris Mountain. We took King Road to Polaris Mountain road to where it J hooked an ended at an epic camp spot that had views for days. We set up camp, relaxed and took in the scenery. The trails were easy and in good shape. Day 2- 46 Miles- We woke up to a beautiful morning and broke camp with a goal of making it to the Hovatter Homestead by days end. We made our way back to King Road then went and explored the Polaris/North Star Mine, this area is pretty darn cool. The trail to Polaris Rd. is easy, Polaris Rd. itself is a short moderate trail. We visited the old cabin then hiked the old road to the mining area. Not much has changed here which is impressive. We explored the mines with core samples and the other debris on the trail to the big mine. After exploring we made our way out the KOFA cemetery where we stopped and paid our respects. The rest of the day's trails were easy to moderate with no significant challenges. Mild off camber spots, rocky terrain, ruts, some steep climbs and epic scenery sum it up nicely. This time I did not let the Hoodoo Wash beat me, I remembered where I got sideways last year and corrected my mistake. We made our way down to check out the Hodoo Cabin this year. It is a pretty cool cabin, however, there is a warning about Africanized Bee's under the bathroom so that's kinda scary. We arrived at the Hovatter Homestead a little before 3 for another relaxing evening under the stars. I visited the family graves, payed my respects the to Hovatter's again and thanked Mr. Hovatter for his hospitality. (I am weird like that) We had the entire place to ourselves until it got dark, then the coyotes started making a bunch of noise. They kept the noise up overnight doing whatever coyotes do at night. Day 3- 29 Miles- We woke to another beautiful but colder morning. We took our time breaking camp then made our way out Hovatter Road to the Pilot on Vicksburg Rd. The trail was just as bumpy and rocky as I remember from last year for the first portion then it evened out and was easy all the way up. The views on the way were just as awesome as l remember. Thanks again to everyone that came along for the ride, I had a good time and hope you did too. I did not take many pictures myself this time and am looking forward to seeing everyone's pics. I purchased the 12 volt 32 Liter ICECO JP30 and the Jackery 300. The ICECO came with an insulated cover, 12 volt power cable, 12 volt cable extender and a power cable for home use. The size seems just about right for my use case. I am usually solo(No wife) when camping and do not bring a ton of stuff anyway so I can make it work. I have been doing some testing over the last few days and this is what I have found. I have the temperature set at 39. The fridge stays between 35 & 41 degrees consistently. That's a win. The draw when the fridge is plugged into the Jackery never goes higher than 37 watts when it runs, which is not very frequent. It's quiet. The first test was with a pre-chilled cooler, a few bottles of water and no insulated cover. My house is about 73 degrees this time of year. I got into it a few times to simulate activity at camp. Ran it off the Jackery for about 18 hours which drained it down to 53%. Not bad, that's another win in my opinion. The second test was with a pre-chilled cooler, random groceries(Water,beer,cheese etc) and the insulated cover on it. Same ambient conditions. I got into it a few times to simulate activity at camp. I can recharge the Jackery of the Jeep during the day to give it a little extra juice and give me some peace of mind at night. Speaking of pass through charging, based on my research I found that it is possible to do this but not recommended. Here's why, while there is power input and power draw more heat is generated and that's not good for the life of battery. However, I read that as long as the draw is less than the input the heat issue is not as much of a concern overall. In my situation with the frequency of use and the draw being low I think pass through charging should be okay. I have more testing to do with this set up in the Jeep and will get to that at some point before first use on the trail.

We're interested in exploring the many pristine beaches along the Sea of Cortez, from San Felipe to Loreto in Baja de California, Mexico. We would be posting this as a ORP Club trip limited to 5 or 7 vehicles including leaders. We expect to be gone a week to 10 days, depending on what the group decides. This will be posted as easy 4x4, but will be required to have recovery points and some lift. EDIT: Looking at this more closely together, @Number7 and I think we would prefer to only go as far down the coast to about El Colorado, if that far, going from San Felipe to 2 or 3 other beach 'campos', and mostly hanging out, before heading back the same way. If we altered the trip to less distance, and 4 - 5 nights of beach camping (gone 7 days max) would you still be into going @alexshel44 & @shellback91 We are researching all the beach camps and hotels along the way for prices and amenities. Crossing the US Border We plan to cross the US Border into Mexico in Mexicali. We will stay together as a group until everyone is through the border and visa office. You will need a US Passport or a US Passport Card We will check in at the border to buy the required visas (depends on number of days we decide to stay) San Felipe - what Rocky Point used to be From there we'll go down to San Felipe for the night, either camp or get rooms at one of the many places to choose from. https://en.sandollarresort.com/ The next day we'll embark upon our journey to discover lazy days and fish tacos at pristine deserted beaches. We will explore along the coast each day until we decide where to stop for the night. There are camp sites and little hotels all along the way. If we decide just to stay a whole day and swim, we will. We'd like the trip to be fluid, and take shape along the way rather than have a set agenda. Some of the campos and points of interest: Leave San Felipe and drive MX Hwy 5 south along the sea of Cortez, stopping along the way at cool places. We will at times take dirt roads to beach coves. Several we've noted in google maps: Bahia Santa Maria Jenny's Beach Resort https://chenowthlegacylodge.com.mx/ After more consideration of this trip, the points of interest below are further than we intend to travel this time: San Francisquito Bahia de los Angeles Daggets Camp ground has palapas with fire pits, and there's running water and hot showers (I have found that there are many campos with showers and toilets in various states of repair) Bahia de los Angeles Museum Puerto San Francisquito Playa del Barril Bahia Concepcion Homeward Bound On the way home we can either go back the way we came, or we can take MX Hwy 1, which goes along the Pacific coast to Ensenada and Tijuana. We can talk about this before going and come up with a plan. There is not a lot that I want to see on the pacific side per se, but I'm not completely adverse to returning that way. The area around Ensenada is noted to be very beautiful. If someone wants to go on this trip but they can't be gone that long, they could go back early with another member. So if you want to go home early, pair up with someone who also wants to leave early. We'd prefer if everyone stays in pairs at least! Considerations: ~You will need Mexican pesos to buy things and tip people. There are several easy ways to obtain them: Purchase pesos at the border - usually fees and higher than going exchange rate I opened a WISE account, moved some US Dollars into it, and converted them into MX Pesos at the going rate for a very low conversion fee. When I get to the MX border, I'll go to a regular ATM to pull out pesos, and I'll use my WISE debit card wherever I can for food, gas, etc. You can buy pesos from your bank if you have a debit account at one of the big national banks such as Chase, Wells Fargo, BofA, etc. ~We will be monitoring US Travel advisories and news from Baja prior to the trip, and will cancel/postpone in the event it's not safe to go. I am interested in doing some exploring in Nevada out near the Alamo/Pioche/Caliente area. I want to go see the Delamar Ghost Town to start. I then want to explore the Silver State Trail System that is in that area. I found a GPX file for Delamar via Alamo Canyon Road on Trails Offroad. The trailhead is just south of Alamo,NV. From Delamar we would go north on Helene and Delamar Ghost Towns trail to HWY 93. From where that trail ends the Silver State Trail System is just north of the highway. If I do not get to this next year then 2024 is when I will. What I have as far as information: 2 trails with waypoints & POI's. A GPX file for the Silver State Trail System.(All the colored in trails West of Pioche) A paper map of the area that shows restrictions of certain trails to certain types of vehicles. An itch to go. Average weather for that time of year. What I do not have: Waypoints or POI's on the SSTS. I do know there are information boards etc. out there. I also believe there is a scattering of old mining operations & possibly homesteads. A final route. This area covers a lot of ground so dissecting is in the future. A crystal ball that can see if the guberment is going to make things worse than they are now as far as gas prices go. Alamo is a little over 6 hours away from where I am so that would mean a long weekend. My plan as of now is to get a room in Alamo on a Friday night, run some trails Saturday and camp. Then run some trails Sunday and either get done early and go home or run until Sunday afternoon and camp or hotel it Sunday night. Could be fun, could be a waste of time but we'll never know unless we go. 🙂 If this is something you may be interested at some point in time let me know. Let's discuss!
