  1. The Ladies Offroad Network is hosting 3 trail training classes in May. No vehicle needed. These are a great learning and networking opportunity. Men are also welcome to join in.   3. We're planning to offer a 4x4 Clinic in early 2019, and we want to know which of these interests you? These are the types of clinic we're considering; please choose one and vote! 1. Absolute Beginner 4x4 Clinic: Learn about the various basic features of your 4x4 vehicle and go on a mild trail ride to practice new techniques. Topics will include the difference between 4-high and 4-low, how and when to shift into 4-high or 4-low, how to read the terrain while driving on dirt roads and easy trails, common trail etiquette, your specific questions and answers. 2. Moderate Trails 4x4 Clinic: Learn about driving on various more moderate level terrains such as off-camber, ledges, rock gardens (creek bed), sand, etc. Gain a better understanding of spotting terminology, hand signals, and 'how to be spotted'. Discussion of the why's and how's of tire placement, sway bar disconnecting, air-up & air-down. Practice new techniques on short moderate trail ride while assisted by trainers. 3. Rock Crawling 4x4 Clinic: Learn how to rock crawl! Discussion and demonstrations will involve reading an obstacle in relation to your rig, going slow and using finesse, when and how to use 'the bump', understanding approach and departure angles, using your lockers. Participants will have the opportunity to practice new techniques on various obstacles while assisted by trainers.
  4. My friend Charlene Bower is conducting a Ladies ONLY Trail Training Class this Saturday (sorry for the short notice). I highly recommend this amazing training to all my 4x4 dirt loving girls! DO IT! You will be SO empowered by this! Even if you're in the passenger seat and only there to take pictures and make sandwiches, this class is for you, because you never know when your skills are going to be needed to get back home! If nothing else, you'll learn how to change a 37" tire by yourself, even if you're a little pipsqueak like me.   5. What: An introductory clinic on using a modern smartphone or tablet as a GPS & topo mapping tool for off-highway travel. The concepts presented should apply to nearly any popular GPS/mapping app on Android or iOS, however we will be specifically teaching the Android app "AlpineQuest". Topics to be covered: - A quick refresher on common terminology (waypoints, tracks, maps, etc.) - Overview of the main features/interface elements in AlpineQuest and similar apps - Which map sources to use for different activities - Downloading maps for offline use before leaving pavement - Loading tracks & waypoints from the internet/friends (GPX files) - Recording your own tracks & waypoints and how to share those - For Premium Club Members: How to download and install our pre-made maps of AZ & UT (and other states soon) The main class will be about 2 hours then we'll do Q&A and can help with individual tablet/app setup if there is time.   7. What: A GPS clinic for those considering or new to using a tablet or phone as a GPS/mapping device. This is introductory level, but more advanced users are welcome to attend and share their experiences! We'll discuss the pros/cons of using a tablet or phone versus a dedicated GPS unit and then I'll do a quick overview of the popular Android apps Backcountry Navigator and Alpine Quest. I'll leave most of the time open for Q&A so we can learn from each other's questions. I'll only be demoing Android apps & hardware, but all of the concepts will apply to Apple iOS devices as well. Meet us at the trail-head for a introduction on how to use your 4x4. Then join us for a safe, easy trail ride! The clinic will cover such things as: when and how to shift into 4-HI and 4-Lo, airing down tires, how to hook up a portable compressor, how to use disconnects (and why they are a good idea). On the trail we'll offer individual support to anyone with questions about how to best approach beginner obstacles such as: soft sand, off-camber berms, and more. We'll also discuss trail etiquette and basic navigation skills. If you're already and avid wheeler, this would be a great opportunity for a less experienced family member to get behind the wheel!
