Old School HEI trick

If you have a HEI with a 4 pin module you can replace it with a specific 5 pin module and the 5th pin, when grounded, will retard the timing by 5 degrees.   

Make sure you get the correct module, there are other 5 pin modules that will not work. 

I used Borg/Warner:CBE22. 

 

I drilled a hole in the side of the distributor and added the green wire.   I tested it yesterday and sure enough when I ground that wire my timing is retarded 5 degrees according to my adjustable timing light.

It's a bit confusing because the new green wire is hard to see under the pickup's green wire and I heat shrinked it red.  All I did was drill a small hole in the side of the distributor and add a gromet to help keep the water out.

What is the advantage of this?   Also, judging from the oxidation on the advance weights, you have some rotor burn through going on.  I would suggest you inspect the rotor for burn through under the center button. If it is there, you have high resistance in the secondary system-- plug wires, plug gap or both.
