Default Old Arizona Topo Maps
While doing some research to find an old mining camp in the Catalina Mountains, I struck gold! Well, not literally, but it may eventually lead me to some . I found a website that has a TON of scanned images of old Arizona (and the other states as well) topo maps. These range from the late 1800s to the mid 1900s. What a find!

Only after a few hours of looking over a couple of these maps, I've discovered at least a half dozen new places to see if I can find, a few that I've already been to that may be misidentified (or changed names) and much more. This can be a great reference for those out exploring the state.

I do have a few questions on these maps, though. I use National Geographic Topo State Series as my main computer topo software, does anyone know how if you can import these images, then calibrate them for use in NG Topo? If not, what other computer SW would you suggest I get to do this? I would like to be able to import some of these scanned in .jpg files, calibrate the map, then use this software to plot GPS coordinates of sites of interest and possibly how to get there, then export those points for use in NG Topo. Any ideas?

Thanks!

i haven't used it, but OziExplorer is supposed to be designed exactly for that purpose: http://www.oziexplorer.com/

Another possibility is XMap from Delorme (Delorme XMap).

TheKSmith,

I went to OziExplorer and downloaded the it and so far it works great! It's very easy to calibrate imported maps and it's amazing how accurate they are. I've spent half the day searching through some of those maps, plotting GPS coordinates and making plans for future explorations!

Thanks!
