The upper channels 20+ are available for both simplex and repeater use. ORP only uses them in simplex mode. Repeater mode requires split frequency, send and receive vary by a frequency offset, whereas in simplex mode you send and receive on the exact same frequency. Repeaters also usually require a CTS or DTCSS tone to activate the repeater. If your radio is in "repeater mode" on say channel 20 instead of simplex mode, you will hear other ORP members talk, but they will not hear you. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

(May I burn in regulatory hell for not using 95e.) But let's be honest. There is no HAM revolution coming. There will not suddenly be a massive throng of off-roaders studying and passing their Technician test and then going out and buying usually more expensive hardware. And as much as I like using HAM and will continue to do so, I am an inclusive sort hence the spirit of the GMRS on a Budget. And lets face it, GMRS is where off-roading in general is going, outside of some semi-proprietary uses of MURS like Garmin (Tread) has done. And the new updates to GMRS regulations allowing for digital telemetry will obsolete the need for solutions like Garmin to use MURS. Total aside, I like using Yeasu digital because it has location telemetry built in standard. In Group Monitor mode I know what direction and how far away everyone in my group is.
