Russ Chung 54 Posted February 1, 2016 Recently Clifford suddenly developed some seriously sloppy (bordering on scary dangerous) road manners. The Jeep was difficult to even keep it in a lane going down the road, and the situation was even worse on windy days. George suspected the steering gearbox, so I took it to the place where we bought it and had it looked at. The shop owner didn't think it was the gearbox, and suggested we were possibly running too low of tire pressure, or that the wheel alignment was off. He said if we continued to suspect the gearbox to bring it to him, and he'd make it right if it were indeed worn or broken. In the process of getting to the gearbox to remove it, it occurred to George that it could be the power steering pump. He said he started the Jeep and stood outside to watch the front tire as he turned the steering wheel, and that the tire didn't begin to move until he had turned the steering wheel quite a lot. The power steering pump on it came with a lifetime warranty, and since it's so much easier to replace than the gearbox, we returned it for a new one. Now the new one is installed, and George said Clifford is no longer a wanderer. I'm really glad the problem is solved and I can drive my Jeep again! My Jeep has seriously sloppy steering. But I'm not sure if it is the gearbox or the pump or the linkage. How did George know that it was the pump??
Number7 89 Posted February 1, 2016 My Jeep has seriously sloppy steering. But I'm not sure if it is the gearbox or the pump or the linkage. How did George know that it was the pump?? I was just throwing parts at it and hoping something would work. What actually made the biggest difference is I replaced all the control arm bushings. aloysius80 0 Posted May 5, 2016 Here's the pictures from when G gussetted the C-Knuckles on the front axle tube: The gussets serve as reinforcement for the C-knuckles, which over time due to the torque of turning over-sized tires up rocks & such can bend upwards. been wondering since i first read this ( a few years ago) how did you check the c's were straight in the first place and did you have to preheat the c's or use any thing fancy to weld them (same when you did the truss on to the diff pumpkin)? He didn't check them for straightness before he added the gussets, and he didn't pre-heat them prior to welding (but he added, it was hot here so I didn't do it, but you should if it's cold where you are). aloysius80 0 Posted May 10, 2016 Thanks Diane. I have to do axle seals in ours and just got ball joints, tre etc turned up from summit so it might be a good time to put some heat in to it. Tj.
