theksmith 5,778 Posted October 16, 2024 (edited) IMO, Gaia is still a lot better than OnX. I'd say the TrailsOffroad app is almost on-par with OnX for people that just want to do the commonly run trails. Gaia is also still a rip-off at their current price, but it's the only viable option on iOS if you like to really explore. I use AlpineQuest Off-Road Explorer, and it does 99% of what Gaia does and some things that Gaia can't, but it's only for the Android platform. I use Gaia, Trails offload since my wife demands full route description :-) and the hiking Project which is free. the latter is not as good as All Trails however it' free, community based and allows to download full state maps. We always look for overland trips that have nice hikes when possible. Primary - Gaia GPS Alternate - Apple Maps (Off Line) Contingency - APRS Map (Have NEVER needed) Emergency - Topo Maps / Compass / Land Nav / Good Shoes & Water The only time I have ever needed Apple Maps (and I knew where I was going already so "need" is a strong word) was when I dropped off grid but forgot to bring up Gaia before I did. They had merged my Gaia Acct with an Outdoors Account and it wanted me to log in and verify a bunch of data harvesting details like name, age, phone, e-mail, etc. Wasn't possible to do so w/o the power of the Internet so I was w/o Gaia for that trip. I like the layer that shows mines and mineral resources so I know what mines I'm near and I created an overlay that has the Ham Radio Repeaters I use. That layer is in BAD need of an update. SonoranWanderer 715 Posted November 2, 2024 I use : Gaia (premium with many layers downloaded) Garmin GPS loaded with Garmin maps and OpenStreetMaps layers Trails Offroad downloaded by state Avenza Maps with most every National Park and Monument map available for Arizona and southern Utah Google Maps downloaded AllTrails (mostly for hiking but has some vehicle routes) Paper Atlas of Arizona.
