GRUNT 111 Posted November 11, 2011 My son turns 14 in one month. He now has finally caught the "car bug." I have tried to get him interested for a long time by having him help prep my motor for going back in the jeep, yet he never seemed to bite on it. Now recently he has but is, as I am sure we all did, asking for a vehicle that I cannot afford. After talking with my son, he has agreed to be happy with any vehicle he gets. My offer to him, I will find a cheap vehicle, prefereably quite a bit older, so that we can get all our parts for cheap at NAPA. In liew of an allowance, I would periodically buy tune up parts, etc. and we together can replace/install them. Thus, he would have a knowledge on how to work on his own vehicle. I am hoping he will be so enthusiastic that he will work on his, while I work on mine. So I am looking for recommendations of a vehicle from you guys. I was thinking retro like a Malibu, Chevelle or more of my liking a truck or FSJ. I figure the cheaper the vehicle, the more money we can put into it. Recommendations? In-A-Rut 3 Posted November 11, 2011 I would suggest a 4wd pickup. Something in the s-10, tacoma, Nissan hard body class. I would stay away from muscle cars, they cost more to fix and can be dangerous for inexperienced drivers. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

theksmith 5,778 Posted November 12, 2011 i like Rut's pickup idea, except i don't know what he's into - low or lifted? a little Nissan Hardbody or a Chevy S-10 could be had for $1,500 that needs a little work. he could dump it or raise it. most importantly other than budget, get something that speaks to him - if he's not into it then it's just going to be an unfinished project. don't force muscle cars on him if he wants a rice burner, or super swampers if he wants a speed-bump scraper. minirails 0 Posted November 12, 2011 Sami's are awesome the problem is they are getting pricey as he11. A fullsize truck is gonna take a teens whole paycheck to keep gas in it. I know almost dying in one has me biased against them, but also you don't want him to be one of those **** 10 guys . A taco would be great for mileage and availability of parts. My buddy swears by the little Mazda trucks, he rolled 2 of them as a teenager in Alaska and walked away both times plus they are good on mileage. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
