CB's - does size matter?

for my application there really isn't any room to mount a full size unit unless you invade the passenger side footwell area.

with that said i'm on my third cobra 75 wx st in the past year; hopefully this ones' handset board will prove reliable.

hindsight being 20/20, i shoulda bought the midland unit.

Cobra's do come with a 2 year manufacturers warranty however so i'll keep returning 'em as long as they supply me with a new one.

i tried the firestik since they're a local company but found out no one could hear me very well. now i'm told i sound much clearer and louder with the cheapo radio shack antenna i bought for $19.

 

where you mount and getting it tuned makes a big difference. and how much Coax cable do you have? if you dont tune you can blow the radio. could that be your cobra problem as well?

not sure; i think Virgil helped me tune it a while ago, isn't that right V?

i mounted my antenna out back above the passenger tail light to avoid ripping it off completely since out here we've got many tight trails with low hanging sycamore, ocotillo and sage brush.

here in the US, CB's are the most common used vehicle-mounted comm option (both for off-road and for on-road commercial truck drivers). CB and FRS are the main frequencies/technologies that the public can use on land without any sort of license. however, FRS are only common as walkie-talkies and you don't see many with an external antenna option so that limits their usefulness from inside a vehicle. CB's actually suck overall though...

 

2M is the most used "ham radio" band, but you do have to take a test and get a license (only a few bucks) in order to use that legally. even the cheap ham radios are usually much better sounding than CB, and have at least a bit more range (for small ones, the higher wattage ones have a LOT more range).

 

there are some other parts of the VHF band that can be used by the public without a license, but mainly for marine use.

We used to have CB but uhf is commonly used now. Dont know of any one with a CB any more.

 

Sadly no plans for a trip any time soon, still just a pipe dream.
