Saturday 8/2/14: Dupont Cabin Loop: Near Punkin Center, AZ: 4x4 EZ

Recommended Posts

P1060982.JPGP1060986.JPG

What:

a "stock vehicle friendly" run, suitable for most high clearance 4x4's without modifications. full-size rigs might find parts of the trail a bit tight and brushy but in general should be ok.

this will be a fairly long day including the highway time. we'll go up from the Punkin Center area to see a secret geological feature and then return in a loop going by the old log Dupont Cabin. we'll climb up above the Tonto Basin area quite a ways, so there are some nice views.

Meet:

meet at the Tonto Basin Marketplace (gas station) near Punkin Center / Tonto Basin at 9:15 AM and leave for the trail at 9:30 AM.

map here: https://goo.gl/maps/eEMpj

it will probably take most folks just under 1.5 hours to get there from Fountain Hills.

Other Info:

bring a lunch and plenty of water!

plan to not be back in the Phoenix area till evening (i.e. bring enough snacks you won't be starving for dinner or bring a trail dinner if you eat early).

bring a flashlight and camera.

current weather calls for a highs in the 90's and 20 to 40% chance of rain in the greater Tonto Basin area. i'll be there rain or shine!

Sign up:

limited to 8 rigs.

The secret geological thing you are talking about is easy to find now. A couple of weeks ago someone had tied a big ribbon to the tree out by the road. If you take the road out of Jakes corner there is now an electric gate with a passcode you have to enter. Let me know and I can get you the combo.

I'd like to meet up with someone and follow to the site. We could meet somewhere in Fountain Hills at 0800 ish and be on our way.

If the route can be handled by our GC, we'd like to tag along.

yeah, the secret has been out for a while but i don't like to publish it and make it any worse. the first time i saw it there was no-way you could stumble upon it and there were hardly any signs of people. then within a year i saw it again and the road was widened and there was some trash there and several people were already there too.

thanks for the heads up on the Jakes Corner route. i'm just going in and returning from Punkin Center - a few miles in the road splits and we'll make a loop back to the point.

I'm in for sure.

gotcha!

do you have a t-case and gas-tank skid? you're rig is pretty low clearance and so there might be spots you would scrape a little. if you have skids then you'll be fine and should definitely come - let me know!

OK, I see where we're going. Takes me an hour to get to Payson so will be the same to Punkin Center. I'll leave at 0800 and be there by 0900. See you all there.

Hi Kristoffer,

I'd like to get in on this one if I can be number 6. Consider me a definite. I'll probably be bringing my wife along (Jackie).

added you!

i also upped the limit to 8 rigs total. after reviewing the route it doesn't seem as long as i first was worried about, so i think we can squeeze a couple more folks in and still be home by dark.

Hi Kris, we'll have to back out of this one for now. We do have the t-case and fuel skids but it'll have to wait for action on some other future trip. My co-pilot can't commit a full day this Sat, boooo :)
