From what it was to "clean as a whistle," your rig write up has motivated me to start on my XJ. I had not thought or realized that the interior could come out. Re-mix on the recipe, now he's saying he used Simple Green and Oxy-Clean, not dish soap. TheK-Man was over last night and suggested maybe a can of clear-coat on the driver's door. It looks like somebody sanded the whole driver's door flat panel?! I wonder if e! got graffitied? dzJeepChic 2,897 Posted August 14, 2009 TheK-Man suggested I try spraying clear coat on the driver door of -e!-. The entire panel looks to have been sanded down by one of her past owners for whatever reason. I figured it was worth a try so I went to Checker, no wait, Reilly's and bought a can. Cost $6.50 for the large size (I wasn't sure how much I would need, but they have a little can for $5.50). George made sure it was all clean and he taped it off This is what the stuff looks like He did a couple of coats Done, WOW! You be the judge, here she is the 1st time I layed eyes on her Here she is as of this morning I took her into Scottsdale today and ran errands. I gotta say, she runs great! D - Per your comment, if you are concerned about her running hot with the A/C on there are write ups for putting vents on the XJ hoods to help with heat issues. dzJeepChic 2,897 Posted August 22, 2009 Poor e!; she ran hot most of the time we were gone. George hard-wired the secondary fan when we got to camp Tuesday night, and that helped, but she still heated up occasionally. The Check Engine light came on sometime Tuesday and was on for the rest of the trip. She competely stalled and wouldn't start while on the trail Thursday (scared the crud out of us), but then we got her started again and made it back to camp no problem. Russ Chung showed up with his code reader; she was throwing Oxygen sensor codes. The Check Engine light went out when Russ cleared the codes but came back on the next morning. We hit pavement (Hwy. 89 North of Big Water) at 1pm yesterday, too early to camp so we hit it for home. Stopped for gas in Flag. e! wouldn't start after filling up; got a jump but she wouldn't idle. Bought a battery, installed it and got going again. Then we realized the squeek we had noticed was getting louder so we stopped and discovered the CV Joint on the front driveshaft was lunched so we pulled it. That's 13 years of NO maintenance right there. We really put her to the test on this trip, and she really performed well. This vehicle is awesome on washboard roads; the stock suspension rides really smooth, and also did fine on a few 3 rated sections. Looking back we should have done more to her before embarking on an 1100 mile cruise, but we made it back! d Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
theksmith 5,778 Posted August 22, 2009 glad you didn't get stranded....sounds like a few maintenance items and she'll be just fine! on the overheating you might try a new radiator cap before you spend too much money on things like water pumps and thermostats and such. oh and here's the key trick for getting your OBD1 codes yourself, and what they all are: http://xjjeep.com/2007/09/24/obd-codes/ Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I talked on the phone a bunch with ya, and always heard about what you were doing to E, but I guess I didn't realize exactly how much work you guys were putting into it. It looks awesome!!
