dzJeepChic 2,897 Posted January 7, 2010 Got a few things done today. Virgil (K7AZV) gave me a diff. guard for my Dana 35 & George installed it. So now if I lame out and totally back into something it'll probably be okay. Thanks Virgil! We've been having some problems with the reverse lights not working and the shifter not engaging all the way into park (so sometimes you had to giggle the shifter to get it to start). George found an article in an old issue of JP Magazine (May '08) that described how to Rebuild the Master Switch on the AW-4 Transmission. It's a common problem to XJs. The NSS Switch (Neutral Safety Switch) is located on the passenger side of the tranny, and basically you take it off, take it apart and clean it. Then you re-apply di-electric grease to the contacts and moving parts. He said the hardest part was clipping the 3 zip-ties off the cable harness to get everything out, the connecting harness was on the firewall. It turned out that our problems eminated from the lower spring being caked with dirt and grime so it didn't push out to meet the contacts on the switch. Here it is all clean and ready to go back together: So now the reverse lights work and you don't need to giggle the shifter to get it to start.
