Everyone knows, XJs mark their territory!
Ha! Usually they do. Especially with so many miles on the odometer. Other than the original NP231 that was going bad and an old lower radiator hose, my jeep has been relatively leak free. Famous last words..

No play on the input shaft but I did notice the pitman arm retaining nut was only finger tight. I believe both the Pitman and stub shaft seals on my steering gear have melted from power steering fluid heating up, causing it to leak and potentially frying the 'shaft bearing too. I called Benchworks last week to find out if they know the difference between a PSC and factory steering box. Dude more or less agreed with this guy on NAXJA http://www.naxja.org/forum/showpost....0&postcount=13 saying there are basically two types of factory Chrysler steering boxes: you have slightly larger ones that came in 97-99 Dodge Durangos and there are the regular ones like I have in my Cherokee and what comes in YJ's, etc. Other than that, he was not aware of any differences in the external appearance of Jeep steering gears unless he could take them both apart side by side and see what's inside. I asked because I have a factory steering box laying in my garage that I would have already had rebuilt except it looks smaller in appearance than my PSC unit. The guy at Benchworks recommended I go ahead and get my PSC box rebuilt in the event it was modeled after the better engineered Durango gear.

It's been at least a month since I've spent any money on the Mustang(gas), now focused on getting my Jeep ready for the dog days of summer and quite possibly the Big Bear trip.

Which reminds me, have you done the new steering wheel cover on your JK yet?

i say just put in the good spare box you have and an inline cooler - run that a while and see if your problems go away. if so, then you can decide whether you want to spend the money to rebuild the PSC box or not on the chance that it is a better design (or just sell it).

is this what your talking about on my JK (second photo)? http://offroadpassport.com/forum/showpost.php?p=43488&postcount=35

Ob1 and Chris have been telling me to get one of these for a while so high time to give it a shot. Also going to have my steering pump looked at again in case something else overheated since last time.

Yes, & I see now you've already done it. I want one for my Jeep and was hopeful you'd show me the proper one to get.

i like the $25 real leather one: http://amzn.to/257M9LZ

sometimes autozone/checker/walmart will have those, but usually they have a similar plain looking Pleather one for around $10.

The front drive shaft binds on full droop with my new(er) NV241OR transfer case installed due to it's higher front output shaft compared to the old NP231. Talking to Joe Daro last weekend he suggested an HP Dana 30 would solve my issue.

AMC salvage wants $300 for a used XJ HP Dana 30 front axle assembly, they tell me it is off the jeep already and they'll verify it is straight before needing my deposit. They're going to check and call me back tomorrow to verify.

Is this a good deal?

Anything else besides reverse cut gears I'd need to purchase that cannot be swapped over from my current axle?

(LP Dana 30 w/ Warn locking hubs, Super 30 Kit and ARB locker)

Joe swapped a '91 high-pinion housing in my 01 XJ over 10 years ago. Only needed reverse cut gears and an install kit.

would be a good time to go ahead and replace the ARB locker seals (o-rings).

Thank you. So roughly an extra $300 in parts. I'm going to get under the jeep to see if I can find out where it is binding. No word back from AMC yet.
