PMA4x4 4 Posted July 27, 2011 I see you installed a tranny cooler and bypassed the OEm lines? Do you have a tranny temp gauge to see what the benefits are? I ask cause I have a 35,000 GVW tranny radiator and at idle even with a fan after driving it still has problems cooling down. It will still hit 210 sometimes also on a side note the airtex fuel pump assembly works fine. I got same model for my 91 it just has to go in a certain way. took me about 15 minutes to figure it out. Once in it has worked find and reads accurately too. so that's my 2 cents.

I had an Airtex pump and it woked fine but the noise was driving me crazy. The Bosch unit is silent. George:cool:
theksmith 5,778 Posted July 29, 2011 so i hear that clifford is still running hot, even after changing the water pump for the second time and verifying no combustion leak is present. some random new thoughts for you.... - is your electric fan installed/wired the correct way? i.e. is it pulling fresh air through the radiator towards the engine versus blowing out the front? - did you replace the cat when you did all that exaust work? i was reading how a plugged catalytic converter or anything actually that is causing too much exhaust back-pressure would cause overheating - too small a muffler even. - hows the belt tension (i.e. so that the water-pump is being driven efficiently and not slipping) just throwing ideas at you, i know how frustrating it is when something seems right in every way already but still doesn't friggen work right! The fan is wired correctly. The cat was brand new when we bought the vehicle, and I did pull the exhaust again recently to make sure the cat wasn't plugged. Belt tension is fine. I am stumped. ::weeping like a school girl:: George
mbuckner 208 Posted July 30, 2011 Have you tried to run it with the thermostat removed? Just to see if it even comes close to the normal run temp ...
Number7 89 Posted July 30, 2011 I pulled the spark plugs, and on cylinders 2 & 3 there is a hue of 'green' on the plugs. I cleaned them up and put them back in. I'm going to pull them again in a few weeks to see if it turns green again, and if it does I think it's a pin-hole leak in the cumbusion chamber. Number7 89 Posted July 30, 2011 Have you tried to run it with the thermostat removed? Just to see if it even comes close to the normal run temp ... No, but I did install a new high flow thermostat along with the new water pump. George:cool:

Maddogjeeper 2 Posted July 30, 2011 Clifford's running a temperature but Doctor George will figure it out eventually. "House" has nothing on him.
dzJeepChic 2,897 Posted July 30, 2011 Have you tried to run it with the thermostat removed? Just to see if it even comes close to the normal run temp ... We ran it today without the thermostat & it acted the way it always does. Clifford will idle it all day long, even with the A/C on, and run at normal operating temperature. As soon as you put the vehicle under any sort of load, namely driving up a hill, it heats up. Notice that's the opposite of practically every 'XJ Running Hot' situation you read about: usually the Jeep heats up while at a stop light and cools back off after you get moving again. I drove it around FH this morning without the A/C on and it got up to 225 just between the Zumba class and home. We're beginning to suspect its a cracked head or blown head gasket. Although there is no oil in the coolant and there doesn't appear to be any water in the oil, G did notice a green tinge on the plugs in cylinders 2 & 3. I actually read somewhere that if it heats up while running it without the thermostat that's a sign of a leak at the cylindar head. Also, a compresion test revealed low compresion on all cylindars: around 100 psi vs. spec. of 120 - 150(?) psi... Now we're researching cylindar heads - they're pricey and there's all kinds of machining going on out there. The only OEM head I found is at MOPAR for $1100. Then there's a bunch of remanufactured for anywhere from $500 - $800. There's a newly cast one which is a 'one size fits all' from like '91 - '01, which doesn't make sense to G. And then of course it's crossed our minds that we should just get a new engine and install it... Anybody with expertise, advise, a good story, please chime in. d ::Just.Empty.Every.Pocket.Blues::
