dzJeepChic 2,897 Posted September 3, 2009 Before we left for The Cinders trip, we got a few things done. Since the Oxygen sensors were bad, we went ahead and pulled the entire exhaust. The old sensors looked burned up. We replaced them with new Bosch with matching factory plugs - $150 - OUCH! George noticed a pinched front part of the exhaust by the collector, so he put a steel pry bar in it and bent it back: The muffler and the cat were the same size diameter, so whoever installed it cut a slit in the muffler pipe and just clamped it on, causing an annoying exhaust leak. He cut the old muffler off And replaced it with a Raptor Muffler from Checker (O'Reilly's) - $25 He got out his trusty Lincoln Wire-Feed Welder using flux core wire Here're the welds While he was under there he figured out why we kept smelling gasoline. One of the two vent tubes was loose, so he got a 3-Way (T-Connector), connected them back together, and Viola! No more gas smell! Today we bought a new radiator cap, thinking that might be part of the problem with her running too hot, but so far it hasn't really made a difference. If we leave it idling without running the electric fan it runs hot. We'll keep trying to figure out why she does that. More Later,d
GRUNT 111 Posted September 3, 2009 "Raptor" I think "E" has a new nickname! Your garage cleanliness amazes me, you could eat off your floor.
dzJeepChic 2,897 Posted September 8, 2009 We found out that we had put the wrong kind of transmission fluid in when we drained it. We bought fluid for Mopar Products, but the AW4 is actually an Asian transmission, which requires Dextron / Micron fluid instead of ATF+4 (which Chrysler recommends). Switched it out today. Live and learn. d
ob1jeeper 849 Posted September 8, 2009 D... Lookin' good... glad to see ou're having fun with it... PS: That "pinched" area of the exh pipe was OEM factory done, to provide a little better clearance and heat protection for the drivers side engine mount cushion... Whoops! Guess we're gonna have to take another look at that! d
dzJeepChic 2,897 Posted September 10, 2009 Operation Run Cool continues in the Zalman Garage. Today George removed the hood and went at it with the 4": The holes were cut in the hood to accept The Ultimage El Cheepo Vents; Mobile Home Floor Vents, $14/Pair: Trimming the Open/Close Louver tray from the bottom off El Cheepo Vents: They will be installed using Caulk-Grade Elastomeric Mastic. Trying them on for size: Curious Cat just got home from work: Also got a tip from SteveO on the VJC regarding the Fan Clutch. Rather than buying a heavy-duty fan-clutch, remove the fan and then with needle-nose pliers, remove the end of the spring from it's keeper, and rotate counter-clockwise 180 to 360 degrees, and then clip it back on. Viola! Heavy-Ass-Duty Fan-Clutch. Lots more grab so far, re-installing tomorrow and will report. e better be a cooler chic damn soon! d
Number7 89 Posted September 10, 2009 Okay guys, this is kind of funny but sad. After cutting the holes in the hood and bolting it back on, I closed it to check the fit, knowing I hadn't re-installed the Hood Latch Cable {major brain fart}, but it didn't really dawn on me until after it was closed (latched). I wanted to make sure everything fit before putting the cable back on - stupid, stupid, stupid! I got underneath and managed to get my hand between the radiator and the pulleys, got a hold of the hard wire that stretches across the front of the hood and pulled. I heard a pop, and thought: 'Yeah!'. To my ultimate disappointment, only the passenger side opened. After about a half hour of struggling with the driver's side, I finally figured out that the driver's side latch is a push, not a pull mechanism. Out came the broom handle, I pushed and banged my fist on the driver's side corner, and 'POP' she went. I was elated at that moment, because I was prepared to dismantle the entire front clip at that point. George
