What did you do to your rig today?

Recommended Posts

Well I tried to replace the A/C clutch today (as I've done 1/2 a dozen times over the years) but it was so jacked-up and rusted that when I went to pull the pulley off the center seal blew spewing oil all over my shop and nearly taking out my eye. Glad I was wearing glasses. Long story short I ended up replacing the entire unit.

Tension pulley adjustment bolt:

Compressor removed for access to Clutch Assembly:

Disconnect the wiring:

Clutch plate removed: Sorry the picture with the removal tool did not turn out... Bear completely shot. That's what happens when you drive 500 plus miles with it howling.....

While trying to remove the pulley and bear which were welded to the shaft, the inner bearing and seal blew out.

Pull the old Compressor out:

Put in a new one:

The ghost isn't a daily driver so we keep it loaded at all times.

I unloaded it ALL, probably 800LBS and will clean and reload today.

It's a major chore since it won't fit in the garage.

Today I did not really work on my Jeep, but I helped someone else using old parts off mine. I recently offered an individual, known for Jeep projects, my old 4 cylinder drive train. He did not need it but had a friend(neighbor) who did. They are going to clean it up and put it into an old CJ. While this may be an extreme endeavor for some, not to worry, these gentlemen are professionals. Who knows, we may hear about it sometime. ;) I am a sentimental guy when it come to my Jeep, so knowing it was going to get some TLC and go into a clean and respectable project made my choice easy. I offered it to him at no charge. I even gave him the new radiator, new shroud, new mounts, and computer to go with it. I have done some extensive research on my own drive train and knew I would not need those items. As I believe in our Jeep community and in Karma, I insisted on no money but as they left he put cash in my hand. Now I have the funds I need to make some serious progress on mine!

On a funny note, we used a tractor to scoop it up since we did not have a hoist. Story to be told around a campfire. :D

Took her to the car wash and knocked the Cinders dust off of her! Also, installed a new air filter for peace of mind and free breathing.

My new to me cast iron front diff is on the way.

I'm putting the two piece front axle back in so I can run a front locker without clanking around corners. My only choice is a lunch box as nothing else fits.

So 231 manual transfer case and a front locker next week.

Ordered a second winch, a hitch mount, to run on the avalanches and the ghost.

Running one gauge dual wire to the back of the ghost and tap in MAJOR power blocks to inside the cabin and at the tailgate and power the rear winch.

We did a drive in the new suburban after a good tune up and netted 15mpg! Besides it was a good excuse to get out.
