theksmith 5,778 Posted February 14, 2017 a few ideas for you... - high quality version of the ball-magnet universal mount. i think we could drill a single hole in the base portion to screw it in from the bottom exactly in place of your Garmin mount, and you can still orient the phone however you want. cons are you have to put a thin little disc on your phone, and i can't say for sure if it would hold the phone off-road well (even though this appears to be one of the better ones with grippy rubber coating between the base and main magnet). - or, slide in cradle with or without charger. these have a pivot type base that we could affix to the same location you have the garmin now, but we'd need to use 2 screws. the base locks down very securely once you have it oriented the way you want (i used the same brand for my 10" tablet in the WJ). cons are cost and it might look a little bulky for your taste. - or, we could probably cut most of the base/neck off this or this, then drill a hole in the remaining portion and mount that right in place of the garmin (using a single hole still). in fact, for the $10, i think i'd try this option with the iOttie first! EDIT - actually this one looks to have a threaded ball and is still $10, i bet we could mod it easily to work as a bolt-in product: http://amzn.to/2lgKUIP or there's always duct tape ...come over nearly any afternoon and we can setup the phone with a topo/map app and work on the mount if you get one. scottL 185 Posted February 15, 2017 I like this one converted to bolt on best because I don't want any suction cup window action and being that my Garmin mount is pretty close to the steering wheel, I would be concerned that I might smack the mount with my hand during evasive driving action. scottL 185 Posted March 6, 2017 After too many open & closings, my rear deck lid chewed a hole through a grommet & a remote switch wire on the harness that connects to my third brake light. The severed wire killed my interior dome lights while the hatch was open. I cut the grommet away & soldered a piece of extension wire to the switch lead Used this liquid electrical tape to hopefully seal & protect the wiring after finishing the extension with solder & some shrink wrap So far so good both my dome lights work again like they should Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

scottL 185 Posted November 15, 2017 A few months back I bragged about ignoring my failing liftgate latch thinking I had a good work around. Last weekend it bit me in the butt at Red Creek. My hatch completely failed & would not open at all. I had to unload & reload our camping gear reaching over the back seat. It was a real PITA. Thankfully I didn't need my tools, spare tire or hi-lift jack during the trip. I found this "best way to open stuck hatch" video on Youtube It is a common problem with 97-01 XJ's, verified by many positive responses in the comments section. Even though my latch guts were slightly different it was relatively easy to fix with the other video I posted in September Hatch finally open, now I am able to remove the trim piece With trim piece removed access to the latch looks like this. The clip that holds my latch rod in place was different than the one in the video and disconnecting without breaking it ended up being the most difficult task. You can see in this pic I've positioned the clamp exposing roughly 1/4" more of the rod end Also note how the end is bent eliminating my idea of securing the rod into place with a nut (insert theKsmith punchline here) I ended up using a few oversized nuts and a couple washers as spacers before tightening on a 3/8" nyloc nut from an old skateboard truck to secure the rod end Hatch works perfect as it did from the factory again, hopefully the extra nuts & washers will keep my latch rod held in position. I could not get the rod to thread far enough into the nyloc but I tightened it good and snug with my ratchet driver. Should have done this a long time ago!
