cool, hope that does the trick. my son & I have been dealing with a similar issue with his willies truck that we built a 327 for a few years ago. it has always run hot. we took out the 4 row brass rad and put a 2 row cross flow alum unit built here in kingman. still ran hot. he parked it for a couple of years and just recently I brought it to our house and put a high flow water pump on it with the same results. I finally used a infra red temperature gun from work with a surface thermometer and they both showed 180-190 at the thermostat housing and at the inlet of the top tank. bottom tank outlet showed 150. bottom line all three gauges we have used were crap. the last one from summit was suspect because it stuck at 130 when cold. the high-flow pump may of cured the problem but what are the odds of three different guages being bad.

what's the prognosis on the high temp issue with Clifford?

G, do you have the oem fan to put back on for a test drive?

I really don't think those comp numbers justify a new engine. My old 64 4x4 pickup has a v8 with over 300k with an average of 80 cranking comp with no overheating issues. if your motor does not use oil then if was me I would continue to look for the source of the heating problem. There may be internal issues but the fact that there was no combustion gases in the coolent is a strong indication to me that the problem not a serious internal problem.
