  1. It's a switch that was used to alter the shift schedule to attain shift points at a higher RPM (and higher clutch apply pressures), for more spirited driving... The "Comfort" mode was for normal driving, where you did not want the harshness of shift points in the cabin...

  5. Yet another reason to avoid full-throttle deep hole water/mud crossings... Or for that matter, ANY deep mud/water crossings that are not absolutely NECESSARY for maintaining your safety...
  6. D... Before you purchase another fan clutch, check to make sure the radiator shrouding, and re-circulation baffling is in place. A radiator, which does not have shielding to protect it from pulling in the hot air that just went through ti (especialy when operating at low speeds) is gonna get warm, whether there is good fan air movement or not... In addition to some foam around the sides and over the top of the rad to control re-circ air flow, XJ's with HD cooliing pkg's originally came with a rubber mat of approx 1/8" thickness that went from the frt c.mbr just below the bottom of the rad, to approx the C/L of the frt axle and attached to the engine oil pan studs, as well as the side rails, and frt. c/mbr... Sort of a large horse-shoe shaped "splash-shield". This was found to be a necessary re-circ baffle to keep them cool when operating under moderate loads at low speeds, and in ambients above 95-100 deg-F. HTH...

That said, the only new vehicles I've ever purchased were all motorcycles... 1- '71 Yamaha RT1-B - Purchased right after getting married, while still in college, and it became my all-around transportation and trail machine... Sold in 1987 2- '76 Kawasaki LTD - Purchased the day I moved to Yuma, AZ. Quickest production bike I've ever ridden... Also sold in 1987... 3- '77 Yamaha TT-500-D... GREAT dune bike... Still have it... Other notables; - First car - '49 Hillman Sta Wagon (I was 8 yro... Fixed it up and sold it to buy a '52 Ford Sedan that needed the OD repaired...) - First M/cycle - '62 Honda 50 Sport - bought with proceeds from selling the '52 Ford... Sold when I started college, to finance purchase of a couple cars needing minor repairs... - Driven when grad from HS - '57 Fairlane 500 conv. (lots of memories with that one... Learned to do body work, and paint repairing that rust-bucket... Back in those days bondo was new and no self-respecting bodyman would use it or trust it, so I learned to use lead for the repairs, and the install of the repair panels...) Man it looked sharp with the shaved chrome, tube grille, narrow whitewalls and baby moons on the reverse wheels. Painted it Marina Blue... Started my love affair with blue cars... - Brother wrecked it when I was freshman in college. Rather than repair it to it's former glory, I patched it up and sold it... - Car sold to purchase rings for fiance. - '64 Fairlane 500 - Number of cars owned by the time I graduated from college - something over 75. I bought, fixed up, and sold cars to finance college... - First car purchased after college graduation - '59 Vet - Still have it... - 1st Jeep - '71 J-4000 complete with snow plow for clearing not only mine, but the neighbors drives also... - Etc., etc., etc.... Guess I should look through the old shoe boxes full of photos, to see if I still have any pics of some of them...

FWIW: the only thing the re-positioning of the spring did was close off the viscous fluid valve internal to the "clutch", so that it is essentuially locked up even @ low ambient and coolant temps, as opposed to closing and engaging the fan only at elevated temps. This is because the bi-metal "temperature control" spring moves the valve as the temp changes, just like the bi-metal springs in your home's HVAC control system does... You could have accomplished the same result by simply replacing the viscous coupling with a solid drive for the fan, and saved the costs & weight of the viscous coupling fan drive... Here's a short synopsis of how it's supposed to work... The temp controlled fan clutch (a.k.a. "temp-a-trol") is designed to NOT function during cooler temps to save the lost energy of spinning that large fan (think less wasted energy or better fuel economy...) Then when the temp of the air coming across the radiator is sufficient to cause the bi-metal spring to unwind, and begin to close the vlave, the viscous (silicone) fluid valve begins to close and the fan begins to pick up speed, until the temp is warm enough to fully close the valve, and "lock" the fan to the same RPM's as the W-Pump. Once the air cools back down, the bi-metal spring cools and begins to open the valve and thus when not necessary to use it, the energy is no longer being used to drive the fan... HTH...
  10. D... Lookin' good... glad to see ou're having fun with it... PS: That "pinched" area of the exh pipe was OEM factory done, to provide a little better clearance and heat protection for the drivers side engine mount cushion...

  12. Bumped into this site last nite while reading the Cinders photo post on VJC... Been Jeeping for a while, with my faithful OlBlue (when she has gas...... Reminder courtesy of Kris, a.k.a. K-smith...). OlBlue is a bright blue (who would have guessed that) CJ7, with a V8, Auto, and full-time 4WD... Hope to see you on the trails...
