Update: While driving back from Chicago we blew the radiator in santa rosa NM. A couple of weeks ago I found that one of the core plugs is leaking badly. I also found several other problems associated with the engine ( not to mention the suspension and drive train. What it needs: new exhaust, water pump, thermostat, rear crank seal, oil pan gasket, clean power and ground, pwr steering lines, core plugs and a new fan shroud. We contemplated selling it and finding a new one but decided just to fix this one. I decided to just pull the engine and fix it at once. Will be pulling it on 14th, but went ahead and removed the exhaust from the manifold back.

Put some core plugs in the cj engine.

There is no lash spec for that motor. If you see damage on the rod ends or rockers you will need to consider getting new ones. I don't know of any shops or even a process for testing coolant flow through the head, most of the times they are flow testing the head for intake and exhaust flow. If the vales are good and there is no damage to the head deck you should not need a rebuild. Make sure you take the water pump off so you can see the side of cylinder #1. Quick question for you, when you increased the fuel pressure and swapped the injectors did you do any thing to the air intake & exhaust? Could some of your heat problem be due to an inability to remove hot exhaust form the combustion chamber forcing the coolant to become hotter.
-
Make sure you keep the push rods and rockers in order.

If you need help I am here for you.
-
Maybe we should have a group class:D
-
You better get to work.

Wish I was there to help you work on it.

It is also important to note which transmission and gear ratio you have in as this will affect the over all performance.

2011-11-24: Thanksgiving at Parker Canyon Lake & Coronado Cave

Apparently all I have is 5 pics from the cave. The 4th one is of the back way out/in that we found that was locked off. -
The spark plug's heat range is an indication of how fast the heat can travel away from the spark plug center electrode to the cooling system. The use of the wrong plugs can cause major damage. Using a hotter plug than OEM calls for, can burn the plugs electrode, it can also cause pre-ignition and can result in burning the piston. Using a cooler plug than called for can foul the plug quickly, cause misfires and/or reduce horsepower. You should always use the plugs that are recommend by the manufacture. Changing the heat range of your spark plugs would have very little impact on any cooling issues.
