What did you do to your rig today?

Recommended Posts

I hit the trail with Charles.   We got  lucky  with some cloud cover.  A nice day  to be out with the jeeps.   It's gonna get hot folks!

Got the new front shackles on and new spring bushings.   A bit of a pain doing it on the garage floor but the weather wasn't too bad today to be working in the garage.

My bushings were toast.   The driver side rubber was almost all gone and the passenger side sleeve was so worn down it just fell out.  Didn't have to press it to get it out.

I haven't test driven it.  As long as I have it on jackstands I figure I will replace the valve cover gaskets.     With the tires off and the axle on the lowest jack stand setting it's much much easier to do work in the engine bay.

On Sunday George installed the ECCM on Clifford for the summer; this time with some new valves so we can run the heater or the ECCM now. That's a write up I'll get around to soon. BUT, after getting all hosed down post ECCM install, and out for a quick 'dry-off' drive around the neighborhood, Clifford decided that he wants his rear axle examined. He let out a series of sounds and seeming gyrations that completely blew G's mind. 🤯 Oddly, the sounds quit as quickly as they started, and could not be replicated the rest of the way home. Yesterday G jacked up the rear and spun everything, looked for play and listened to everything --- Nothing, could not replicate.

We're both afraid that our most recent rear axle repair is coming back to bite us, don't know. We're going to take him out on some dirt roads close to home today to see or hear what we see or hear. 😮 We're headed to the Dusy this summer, so right now we've both got visions of needing a whole new axle, but time will tell. 🙏 for Clifford.

We were able to replicate the sound when doing tight turns.

Looks like we're in for a new rear axle because no matter what neither of us trusts the old one now. I guess I'll be updating Clifford's build thread....

Sorry to hear you guys are having axle issues.   Is Christian helping with your new axle?

Got the replacement engine installed this weekend.  Had my share of fun with it, I don't think this Jeep likes me.   I had the engine down and in the engine bay fairly easily, and even got a few bell housing bolts started.  But........... I couldn't get the left side of the engine to full seat against the bell housing.   It took a bit to figure out what was wrong.  There are pilot bushings on the lower sides of the block.  What I didn't know was when I pulled the engine, the left side stayed in the transmission, instead of coming out with the engine.

Area circled in red.

The replacement engine already had 2 installed.  I had to pull the engine completely back out, remove the offending bushing and then reinstall the engine.  Considering I'm doing this by myself, the install was fairly easy.

Replacement engine in the bay.

Hard part is done.  Now to finish the reassembly.
