Just did a little on line checking and what I previously said it true to a point;

 

"Arizona’s Trust Land is managed by the Arizona State Land Department. Trust Land is not public land. An OHV Decal allows crossing Arizona State Trust Land when operating on existing roads, trails (unless otherwise prohibited) and designated routes. A valid hunting and fishing license allows for that specific activity on State Trust Lands. A recreation permit is required to camp, hike or conduct any other recreational activity."

 

So I guess you could say you were traveling to or from a fishing site or hunting. Probably getting the permit is the easiest option.

tough argument when you are traveling in a group. With so many of Az trails on state trust land or requiring you to cross STL it just makes sense to pick up a permit. Not a difficult thing to do. It was sad when they took away the club permits as it made things more difficult to make sure everyone had a permit on given trips. I have only been stopped once, it was more of a curiosity stop then anything. The officer just wanted to ask questions about the truck. He was looking for people doing bad things more then checking for permits. Not sure what the fine is but it is not worth the hassle.

As I recall, I believe the fine could be as much as $500 per person in the vehicle without a permit. I remember asking the STL office this question because at the time I had family from out of state coming to visit who wanted to go offroad. To take them on STL, each of them would have to have purchased their own permits. It could very well be different now though. Chad.

I know that there are 2 offices you may visit to obtain the permit the same day. One is on Adams in PHX, the other is WHERE? Does anybody know?

According to their website, you can only get permits at the Adams street office:

FWIW, I spoke with the Land Management office this morning. They stated that "The office on Adams is the only office that you can pick up a permit in person," and that "all permits are processed and mailed back out within 24 hours, so any delays would be the fault of the USPS."

 

For anyone who's going to pick up a permit:

- I was also told that picking up a permit at the Adams office would take approx 5 minutes, less if the permit application is already filled out.

- Payment is accepted as cash, check or money order, no cards of any sort.

 

EDIT: They also said that, in a rush, if one were to attach a sheet of paper to the application that includes an email address and a request for a temp pass for this weekend, they'd email a valid temporary pass to print out if the real pass doesn't arrive in time.

mine just expired last month, so i went down this morning for a new one and was in-and-out in 60 seconds

I called them and have it set up now to call on Thursday by which time my app will be logged in their system (although I most likely will not have received it back in the mail) so they will email me the temp. copy. Thanks Jeff (underlyverbose) for that info.

I called them this morning as well (they must be wondering about all the calls.) They said the Adams office is the only place where you can get it. I did ask if you had to do it in person or could someone drop off your application if it was already signed. They said that was Okay, so I am going to ask my B-I-L to pick one up. If that doesn't happen, then I will pick it up Friday.

I realized today that I'm confusing this permit with the one for the Cabeza Prieta. They have a 2nd office here in PHX somewhere. But anyways, I'm glad the State Land people are so easy to work with. Looks like we'll all be legal as eagles for the trip, which makes me rest easy at night.
